How We Use Content

Authoring Tools

Octivo works with a range of Authoring Tools to meet our client needs. At the present time no one authoring tool is perfect for all situations and clients.

What is an Authoring Tool

An authoring tool is a platform or piece of software that is used to design and build an eLearning course and usually outputs it as either a SCORM or xAPI learning object, or as a HTML5 web learning object.

The choice of which authoring tool to use is complex. In some cases, it is determined by the client already using a particular tool. In others, it is the characteristics of the eLearning to be produced that drives us to a particular solution.

As well the common ones of Articulate Storyline 360 and RISE 360, Adobe Captivate, Evolve and Adapt, we also have our own Octivo Authoring Tool (OAT) that is perfect for mobile-first learning design. OAT is constantly evolving to support AR/VR learning and new forms of interaction. We also author within the LMS, such as Moodle or Canvas, and we use H5P.

Let’s look in a little more detail at each solution.

Articulate Storyline 360

Storyline offers a great deal of control over the elearning that is created. For that reason, when we author in Storyline we usually prototype the design in Adobe XD first.

Rise@2x

Articulate RISE 360

RISE is a pretty easy to use authoring package that offers a simpler environment than Storyline but offers fewer advanced features.

Adobe-Creative@2x

Adobe Captivate

We use Captivate when a client is already using it and requires it. Captivate makes it easy to take existing PowerPoint content as the basis for building an eLearning course. The latest version makes creating VR walkthroughs pretty easy to include, which suits some types of training perfectly.

Evolve@2x

Evolve

Evolve is an authoring platform that focuses on active learning and simulations.

ADAPT@2x

Adapt

Octivo is highly experienced with Adapt, which is an open-source authoring platform that lets you create highly interactive, responsive, mobile-first eLearning.

H5P@2x

H5P

Many of our clients love H5P, a platform for building highly interactive mobile-friendly HTML5 content to incorporate into an LMS course. Octivo works with H5P for many clients and can integrate it into a LearnDash LMS for clients who want a complete solution.

Octivo Authoring Tool

Octivo likes Adapt so much we have built our own authoring tool by extending Adapt.

The Octivo Authoring Tool (OAT) is recommended when clients want advanced eLearning that is highly interactive, mobile-first and uses complex assessments.
