As with elearning authoring tools, there is no one-size-fits-all approach when choosing an LMS. 

Choosing the right LMS relies on the type of learning experience you wish to achieve.

To keep things simple, some initial key questions to think about are:

• Does the LMS support the elearning file type and size (i.e. SCORM, xAPI)?
• Are you needing a certification accreditation option (i.e. Certificate or Badges)?
• Will specific learner pathways need to be setup? 
• Do you require online forums for peer-to-peer learning?

Absolutely! Any learning in any format can be converted into an eLearning course. With appropriate planning, storyboarding and clear Intended Learning Outcomes, any content can be transformed into a beautiful eLearning course.

One thing to remember is that content designed for live delivery, whether through a webinar or a face-to-face workshop, will normally not be enough for a purely online learning experience. This is because when we are teaching in person we can adapt, respond to questions and add material as needed. An elearning course needs to cover everything that might come up. This means there is more work involved than you might expect.

But these options go well beyond just providing the same content in written and video form, for example. Some people need an active, highly interactive approach, others a more laid back and passive one. Some people need to work through the material in a linear or sequential manner, but others learn better when they can jump around.

Yes, but it can depend on the LMS and the author tool that is chosen.

This is why we like to work with our clients early in their process, focus on who the learners are and how they are most likely to learn, and then make an appropriate decision about the tools that are right for the circumstances.

Any way that you might assess an in person learning course can be applied to eLearning. The key determinant is whether the client wishes to have the elearning run itself or whether they can and will have staff members involved.

For a self-running eLearning, all assessment has to be able to be assessed by the computer. Common forms of assessment will be:

• Single answer and multiple-choice questions
• Matching activities
• Fill in the blank
• Perform a simulated task where there are limited options
• Sequencing (put a list of activities in the correct sequence)
• Meeting some requirement, such as time in a course, posting a set number of comments on a discussion forum, etc.

Where a staff member is able to assess work, then in addition to all of the above you can assess written answers, video recordings of the learner performing a task, images of a constructed object, electronic test reports from a piece of diagnostic equipment and so on.

Even with self-running eLearning it is possible to design a task that the computer cannot assess in such a way that what is produced by the learning doing the process is an answer than can be assessed in one of the above ways. This is where our instructional designers come into play, who are expert at finding effective ways to assess while making tasks relevant, engaging and authentic.

How long is a piece of string? Accreditations vary enormously from country to country and from industry to industry.
